The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is a statutory body established in terms of the Engineering Profession Act (EPA), 46 of 2000.

Consequently, ECSA is the only body in South Africa that is authorised to register engineering professionals and bestow the use of engineering titles, such as Pr Eng, Pr Tech Eng, Pr Techni Eng, Pr Cert Eng, on persons who have met the requisite professional registration criteria.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a statutory requirement for all Registered Persons under the Engineering Profession Act, ensuring that engineering practitioners remain current, competent, and professionally relevant in a rapidly evolving field.
CPD promotes lifelong learning, ethical practice, and alignment with international standards—supporting public safety and confidence in the engineering profession.
IPET is recognized by ECSA as a licensing body and is required to verify and validate all CPD courses in accordance with ECSA’s rules.
